The Pacific Whaling Company opened its first whaling station at Sechart in the Barkley Sound in 1905. For next few years demand for whale products was high, peaking in 1911. Due to depleting whale stocks, market slumps, depressions and aging machinery, Sechart Whaling Station's last season was 1917.

More than a 100 years later, you can still find whale bone, bits of pottery and other artifacts on the grounds of Sechart Lodge.

The Lodge....
Our guest rooms are decorated in colour schemes which are as restful to the spirit as they are to the eye and include beds and bedding, washbasins and daily housekeeping. A short walk down the hall will take you to the fresh and clean washrooms and shower rooms.
Enjoy home cooked meals in the dining room from where you can enjoy a superb view of ocean and islands. After a day of paddling, hiking, fishing or relaxation and fresh air, we encourage you to join in with your fellow guests in the sharing of good food and conversation. Soak in the hot tub where you can watch whales in the water and bears on the beach.  In the evening enjoy live music around the campfire. Bring your own musical instruments and jam with our very own house band, The Sechart Whalers. Wine and beer are available for purchase.
The lodge is not located in Port Alberni but is situated in Barkley Sound only a 1/2 mile north of the Pacific Rim National Park Boundary in Sechart Channel adjacent to Canoe Island. One-night stay (including meals for a 24 hour period)

Accommodation and meal rates are quoted in Canadian currency and do not include applicable taxes. We will accept Visa or Mastercard credit cards to pay for and secure your reservation. 

CHECK OUT IS AT 10:00 am.

After that time access to the main lodge and grounds is for checked in lodge guests only. Guests are reminded to please bring your own beach towels, as Sechart Lodge does not provide towels to be taken away from the main lodge. Day lodge is open to all guests. Anyone using the day lodge showers must provide their own towels. This includes any lodge guests that have checked out.

Please inform us of any dietary needs. We do try our best to accommodate every one, but are limited.

To obtain a copy of the tides for the dates when you will be staying at Sechart Lodge, follow the link to open the tidal predictions page. Once there choose your date and location on the left side of the page and then click on the print button at the bottom of the page to print a copy of the tidal predictions to bring along with you. The page you are directed to has the tidal predictions for Effingham Bay, which is located in the south-east region of the Broken Group Islands.  This would be the best location to choose for printing a tidal forecast for use in the Broken Group as this location best represents the predicted tides for the Broken Group Islands in general.                   
Notice of cancellation received by our office six weeks or more in advance of your reservation date entitles you to a full refund. Five to six weeks notice 75% refunded. Four to five weeks notice 50% refunded. One to four weeks notice 25% refunded. Less than one week no refund will be issued. A postponement of a reservation is deemed to be a cancellation. Reservations are not transferable to another period. To avoid a financial penalty we encourage our guests to consider purchasing cancellation insurance from a third party if you feel you may not be able to honor your reservation with us due to a medical emergency or other unforeseen circumstance.

Consider holding your next family reunion or wedding at Sechart Lodge during our off-season which runs from the beginning of October to the end of April. Just imagine yourselves dropped off on a Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday with family and friends, relax and enjoy nothing but great food, fresh air, friendly hospitality and the best scenery anywhere. The ship will return for you three or four days later -- any number of good things could happen! Your enquiries are welcomed.
