DRIVING TIMES & OTHER TRAVEL INFORMATION
Most people driving to Vancouver Island use one of the three major routes operated by BC Ferry Services to get here. These are Horseshoe Bay (north of Vancouver) to Departure Bay (Nanaimo), Tsawwassen (south of Vancouver) to Duke Point (Nanaimo) and Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay (north of Victoria). Since you will be driving to Port Alberni to spend a day, or longer, with us you will most likely use one of the first two routes outlined. Therefore you should know that the driving time from Departure Bay Terminal in Nanaimo to our dock in Port Alberni is about 1 hour and 10 minutes. Driving time from Duke Point Terminal, located just south of Nanaimo, to our dock is about 1 hour and 25 minutes. And just in case you decided to visit Victoria before coming to Port Alberni you should allow 2 and a half to 3 hours driving time, depending on the time of day you will be driving.
There are no ferry sailings connecting the mainland of British Columbia with Vancouver Island that start early enough in the day to allow you to also drive to Port Alberni in time to catch our 8am sailing to Barkley Sound. Please plan on being in Port Alberni the evening before. For information about the ferry schedules and rates for travel of passengers and vehicles to Vancouver Island from the British Columbia mainland, please click on the link for BC Ferry Services. For ferry travel to Vancouver Island from Washington State with your vehicle please go to the Washington State Ferry Schedule to leave from Anacortes or go to the Coho Ferry to leave from Port Angeles.
During the summer season our office is open later into the day affording you the opportunity to drop in to see us and receive any last minute instructions necessary or to purchase your tickets for the next day's sailing. You can also check on parking locations for your vehicle. For directions on one day parking or long-term parking. The parking areas are provided by the City of Port Alberni and are not secured. These areas have been generally safe however we will not assume any responsibility for the security of our customers' vehicles.
