THE WILD WEST COAST

Bring your binoculars and you might just find some of the creatures that call the Alberni Inlet their home. From humpback whales to eagles and even black bears emerging from the forest. Here, there's wildlife all around.

HISTORIC BAMFIELD

A quaint remote village defined by exploration. Hike, kayak or stroll around the area to find hidden beaches, waterfront boardwalks, quaint shops and cottages. Venture south to Brady’s Beach, a place of solace with massive rocky sea stacks along the sandy shore.

Bamfield also services Pachena Bay and the start of the world famous 77-kilometre West Coast Trail.

MV FRANCES BARKLEY

The MV Frances Barkley is a 65-year-old heritage ship originating in Norway. After trekking through the Atlantic Ocean to Vancouver Island, she started her current route in 1990.

Today, the ship is known for the essential services it provides to people in the remote communities of the inlet. The 36-metre vessel can carry up to 144 passengers and 100 tons of cargo.

Arrive KILDONAN 10:00 a.m.
Arrive BAMFIELD 12:30 p.m.
Depart BAMFIELD 1:30 p.m.

Please arrive between 7:15 am – 7:30 am to purchase your tickets and board the ship.

Please note that for the Bamfield route arrival times are approximate and may vary with the amount of freight carried and number of stops required throughout the day.

Oct 1st to May 1st we go into winter hours and will no longer stay in Bamfield until 1:30 pm. We will be departing Bamfield once all freight has been delivered.

It may be cool on the water so please bring along with you a warm sweater, rain jacket or windbreaker and wear sensible shoes. You will be sailing aboard a working Packet Freighter and you will be most comfortable if you dress accordingly. Don’t forget your binoculars, camera, spare batteries and extra media card. While we do service various destinations in Barkley Sound and drop off, or pick up passengers at those locations, please be aware that for day trip passengers, disembarking only occurs at the final destination of the day trip in Bamfield. There are no other stops along our route when day trip passengers leave our ship.

There is a galley aboard our ship where you may choose from a variety of menu items. There is also a variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages available.

Smoking is permitted on the lower back deck. Cannabis is not permitted.

All passenger fares are in Canadian currency and do not include GST. Accepted forms of payment are Visa, Mastercard, travellers’ cheques and cash. We are only able to accept debit cards at our office in Port Alberni and not aboard our ship.

On sailing days, our office opens for ticket sales at 7am.

  • Children aged 8 – 15 years travel for half fare.
  • Children aged 7 years and under travel for free.
  • All children must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Rates and schedule subject to change without notice.

The Frances Barkley is available for charters to take your group on day or evening cruises when our schedule does not meet with your schedule.  The  charter rate is $950.00 per hour with a 3 hour minimum charge. Tax is extra. Cook extra $195.00 + cost of food. Extra crew charge of $50.00 per hour if your charter is more than 50 people.

Deposit required on the day of booking. Full payment due 2 weeks prior to charter date.

For customers who need delivery of items ranging from groceries and appliances to building materials and machinery to their location in the lower Alberni Inlet or to many points in Barkley Sound, please give us a telephone call or see us at our office and we would be happy to discuss the options with you.

There will be a delivery fee of $41 for freight drop off at private docks. Scheduled stops, Bamfield west and east docks, Kildonan Post Office dock  will not be charged the delivery fee.
